How To Fix Landing Gear on Trailer

Hello everyone, LUEN is going to teach you a simple but effective way to solve a common problem you may encounter with your trailer's landing gear. Whether you are a seasoned RVer or a first time trailer owner, this tip will come in handy at some point. Let's learn to fix a landing gear on a trailer together.

First, let's identify the problem. Imagine you've just arrived at the campground, or are about to hook up your trailer, only to realize that one side of the landing gear is fully extended and in contact with the ground, while the other side is significantly higher than the ground. This can cause instability and make it difficult to level the trailer, not to mention it can be frustrating.

Now, here's the good news - fixing this problem is relatively simple. The culprit is a component called a tie rod, which, despite its name, functions similarly to the tie rods in a car's steering system. Essentially, it connects the sides of the landing gear, allowing you to operate both sides with just a crank handle.

To solve this problem, follow these steps:

Locate the tie rods:

Start by identifying the tie rods, which are usually located on top of the landing gear and underneath the trailer. The tie rod connects the two gearboxes so they can move in sync.

Disconnect the tie rods:

Using a wrench or socket set, loosen and remove the nuts and bolts holding the tie rods to one of the landing gear bars. This will disconnect the tie rods and give you the flexibility to adjust each side independently.

Adjusting the trailer landing gear:

With the tie rods disconnected, use the crank handle to manually raise or lower the landing gear on the out-of-alignment side until it lines up with the other side. This may take some trial and error, but patience is key.

Reconnecting the tie rods:

Once both sides are aligned, further rotate the crank handle to align the holes in the landing gear bars with the holes in the tie bars. Then, re-insert the bolt and tighten the nut securely to re-establish the connection on both sides.

By following these steps, you will have successfully aligned the landing gear and ensured that both sides of the landing gear are level and ready to support the trailer. Remember, regular inspections and maintenance will help prevent similar problems in the future.

In conclusion, dealing with  landing gear on a trailer that is not level is not difficult. With a little knowledge and some basic tools, you can quickly and easily fix this common problem and keep your trailer stable and ready for your next adventure. Have a great trip!
