Before selecting a trailer hitch we need to know what different types of hitch are available, next LUEN will introduce you to the five basic types of trailer hook.

Fifth Wheel Hitch (Kingpin Hitch):

This type of hook is specifically designed for semi-trailers and is mounted on the truck's frame, usually above the rear axle. It consists of a locking mechanism that engages with the kingpin on the trailer, providing a secure and stable connection. The fifth-wheel hitch allows for the transfer of both weight and steering control from the trailer to the truck, enabling safer and more efficient towing.

Gooseneck Hitch:

The gooseneck hook is characterized by its elongated neck that extends from the truck's bed or frame, connecting directly to the trailer's coupler. This design offers increased stability and control, particularly when towing heavy loads. The gooseneck hitch is commonly used for towing livestock trailers, equipment trailers, and other large, specialized vehicles.

Bumper Pull Hitch (Ball Hitch):

A bumper pull hitch, also known as a ball hitch, attaches to the rear of the truck via a receiver mount. It features a ball at the end, which the trailer's coupler locks onto. This type of hook is suitable for lighter loads and is commonly found on pickup trucks towing campers, boats, and other recreational vehicles. Its simplicity and ease of use make it a popular choice among casual towers.

Pintle Hook and Lunette Ring Hitch:

This traditional hitch system comprises a pintle hook mounted on the truck and a lunette ring attached to the trailer. The pintle hook slides into the lunette ring and is secured with a locking pin, creating a sturdy connection. The pintle hook and lunette ring hitch is known for its durability and ability to withstand heavy loads, making it ideal for industrial and construction applications.

Underride Protection Hitch:

Although primarily designed for safety rather than direct towing connection, underride protection hitches are an essential component of modern truck trailers. They consist of a sturdy bar or guard mounted beneath the rear of the trailer, which prevents smaller vehicles from sliding under the trailer in the event of a collision. While not directly involved in the towing process, these hooks significantly enhance road safety and reduce the severity of potential accidents.
